Black Excellence Award - Jennifer Scurlock


Jennifer (Broadous) Scurlock is a high school English Language Arts teacher in Eugene School District 4J-- teaching Ethnic Studies, AP English Language and Composition. She  served as a Director on both the Oregon Education Association (OEA) and the National Education Association (NEA) Boards (2016-2023), the Chair of the NEA Human and Civil Rights Awards Committee (2019-2023), as well as other state and national committees. 


In addition to teaching, Jennifer is the Vice Chair of Oregon’s State Board of Education, and a new member of the University of Oregon's College of Education's Advisory Council. Her passion for God is reflected in her work conducting symposia and trainings for students, educators, and community members. She is the recipient of the 2017 OEA Excellence in Education Award (2017), was nominated for the 2019 ACE Award for “demonstrating an outstanding commitment to excellence in education,” and is the recipient of the 2023 OEA Ed Elliott and Teresa Ferrer Human Rights Award (2023). 


Jennifer holds a master’s degree in Educational Leadership and Development and a bachelor’s in English and Ethnic Studies (minor) from the University of Oregon. She has been married for 26 years to her husband, John Scurlock, and they have two children.
